Threads of Time
A curated archive of vintage and contemporary dress patterns, exploring representation and materiality through photographic processes.
I wanted to highlight the lack of varying body type representation within clothing pattern illustrations, photographs, and sizing, as well as the complexity of the sewing skills required. I have used the process of cyanotype to highlight the memory and history of these skills and push the boundaries of its materiality.

I collected vintage and contemporary dress patterns online and from second-hand stores. I combined various paper pattern sections with fabric to produce my own unique skirt. I then cyanotyped and sewed on the illustrations. The skirt is sectioned into 3-4 centuries per panel from 1847 to 2024. I have chosen illustrations and photographs that represent trends and activities of that time. The last section represents socially and environmentally ethical brands such as Paper Theory Patterns, Common Sitch and Munaandbroad.
